Roger Vilder Exhibition

Roger Vilder, one of the founders of kinetic art, will have a solo exhibition at the Latvian Academy of Arts from May 11 to 20, accompanied with a lecture on May 12. Vilder was one of the first in the world to discover new technologies for artistic purposes and to use computer technology and algorithms in art. The exhibition is curated by Anna Sausverde-Ellger, M.A.

Endowing geometric figures with real movement, the artist allows them to express the feelings of organic life and communicate with the viewer. The minimalism of the objects he creates, challenges our perception and allows us to realize the infinite dimension of art.

Born in Lebanon in 1938, Roger Wilder studied visual arts at Concordia University in Montreal in the second half of the 1960s and began exhibiting at galleries in New York and Canada shortly thereafter. In 1971, Wilder participated in the Kinetics exhibition at the then-famous Hayward Gallery in London together with Alexander Calder, Jean Tinguely, Julio le Parc, Francois Morellet, Nam June Paik, Gianni Colombo, Pol Bury, Günther Ucker, 66 artists in total. Participation in the legendary exhibition recorded the names of these artists in the history of art.

In 2019, to mark the centenary of kinetic art, Professor Serge Lemoin, curator and former director of the Musee d'Orsay, invited Vilder to a retrospective of the 100 Outstanding Kinetics at the Kunsthal Rotterdam. Vilder's works belong to the collections of the Museums of Modern Art at the University of Montreal, Ottawa, San Francisco, the Museums of Art in Ludwigshafen and Gelsenkirchen in Germany, and to major private collections in France and elsewhere.

Roger Wilder has held more than 30 solo exhibitions and is still being creative.

The opening of the exhibition of Roger Vilder will take place in the hall of the Latvian Academy of Art May 11, 2022 at 5PM and the artist himself will be present. The audience will be addressed by the Rector of the Academy, Kristaps Zariņš and the Ambassador of Canada to the Baltic States Kevin Rex.

The next day, May 12 at 17.00, the artist will give a lecture at the great hall of Latvian Academy of Art. The lecture will be in English, free entrance.

The exhibition is curated by Anna Sausverde-Ellger M.A. of ArtPromotion02.
